Audi prepares its four-door coupe

The Audi A7 has been in the market since 2010 and with the new A8 bowing out soon, the second generation of Audi's four door coupe is also marked for a full redesign. Our spy photographers were able to spot the second generation model doing rounds in a closed circuit.

Even from a distance, one can see that the sloping roofline has been retained for the second generation A7. It also appears that the front fascia has been given a wider version of Audi's signature single spaceframe grill with more defined edges and angles. Judjing from the photo, the side air intakes have a new, more upright shape compared to the current model's trapezoidal intakes. Also seen here is a pop-out rear wing.

Like many of Volkswagen Group's large offerings, the A7 will be riding on the MLB Evo architecture. The MLB Evo platform currently underpins the second-generation Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga and the Volkswagen Phideon which is currently an exclusive model to China. This platform will also serve as the basis for several future Volkswagen cars such as the third-generation Porsche Cayenne, the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Coupe, the third-generation Volkswagen Touareg and the Audi A8, also slated for 2018.

At the time of writing, engine specifications have yet to be confirmed even for its bigger sibling, the A8. Do expect a range of V6 and V8 engines for Audi's four-door coupe but there may be a possibility that a turbocharged four cylinder engine may join the range. The 2018 A7 is likely to get a wide range of engine choices just like the current model. Our spies tell us that a plug-in hybrid may soon be part of the lineup.
