Flagship Audi slated to debut next year
Last month, Audi confirmed there there will be an all-new A8 in the pipeline and promises to boast of the latest technologies the brand has to offer. Audi is hard at work with the development of their all-new flagship and these latest batch of spy shots see the F-Segment sedan doing laps around the Nurburgring for chassis development.
Being the marque's flagship model, the all-new A8 will square off the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The silhouette of the car suggests that it will follow the design cues seen in the Prologue concept from 2014. Underneath the disguise will be Audi's signature single-frame grill and a wider, more aggressive stance.
The car rides on the MLB Evo platform which Audi says is lighter than the current model's chassis by 200 kilograms. As for engines, only one engine has been confirmed, namely the biturbo 6.0 liter W12 engine found in the Bentley Bentayga. In the ultra-luxury SUV, the W12 engine puts out 600 PS and 900 Nm of torque and power is transferred via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Expect a full range of gas and diesel engines for the fourth generation A8 as well as a plug-in hybrid joining the lineup for the first time. As with previous A8's, Quattro all-wheel drive is standard.
For the fourth-generation A8, it will be available with semi-autonomous driving Audi calls the Traffic-Jam Pilot System. The new tech allows the car to drive itself to speeds up to 60 km/h plus Audi says that they are targeting 2025 as the year their cars will feature full self-driving capabilities.
Other technologies to be expected in the upcoming A8 are laser headlights, OLED taillights and an e-turbo which is currently applied to the SQ7. Audi has confirmed the new flagship's launch for 2017 and deliveries will begin on 2018.
