To be codenamed G20

If one was to follow the seven year life cycle of BMW models, the BMW 3 Series is due for an all-new model within a few years. Our spy photographers have snapped a well disguised example of the seventh generation model around the automaker's home base in Munich.

Due in two years time, the there are still little details surrounding the G20 3 Series. The false panels seen in this test car hides the signature kidney grill and it is likely that it will get a similar front fascia treatment as the current 7 Series. Another signature BMW design feature is the Hoffmeister Kink on the rear doors. At the back, the “Bangle” trunk as seen in the E90 and F30 3 Series gets a slight evolution of the theme.

Our spies were also able to take a photo of the interior. While not yet its final design, one can see a redesigned center console and a makeshift iDrive screen. The instrument cluster boasts a screen instead of regular dials, which suggests it will be an option when the car is released. It would also appear that the interior door panels are placeholders at the moment.

For the powertrain, it is likely that it will be powered by the company's recently updated EfficientDynamics engine lineup. These include a new three and four cylinder turbocharged gas engine, as well as new turbodiesels. A three cylinder may soon power the G20 as the current generation model is also available with a three cylinder mill under the hood. As seen in this test car, the twin exhaust pipes suggest this is a more powerful model, perhaps the new six cylinder that powers the current and recently updated 3 Series.
