Local spy shot hints Philippine launch soon
After making its debut in Auto China 2014, it would appear that the next-generation Chevrolet Sonic is being prepared for a Philippine debut.
A car that appears to be the new-look 2016 Sonic was spotted testing on our roads yesterday in Calamba, Laguna. One will notice that the conduction sticker is also consistent with Chevrolet Philippines' combination, possibly hinting the car's imminent arrival.
Called the Aveo in China, it mimics Chevrolet's current design language seen in the full-size Impala and all-new Malibu. While the car is covered up in camouflage, one can expect the local model to feature the brand's signature split grill and large air intake. It also gets Malibu-like chrome trim around the foglights for top-spec models. Final specifications are yet to be announced but in China, the Aveo (Sonic in our market) is powered by a 1.4L or 1.6L ECOTEC DVVT engines available with a 5 speed manual for the 1.4 and a 6 speed automatic transmission for the 1.6.
The 1.4 liter engine puts out 103 PS and 131 Nm of torque while the 1.6 liter has an output of 121 PS and 155 Nm of torque. As for dimensions, the Aveo measures in 4378 mm long, 1735mm wide and 1517 mm tall and wheelbase measures in at 2525 mm.
The Chinese-spec models gets features and amenities like Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system along with a 7-inch high-resolution touch screen in its center console. MyLink comes equipped with a multimedia player, Bluetooth phone connectivity, Siri Eyes Free and intelligent voice navigation. Other convenience features include a four-way adjustable steering wheel, adjustable headlamps and 21 storage bins throughout the cabin.
There is currently no official launch date for the new Sonic in the Philippines. However, it is possible that Chevrolet will debut their new subcompact at the 2016 Manila International Auto Show this April.
