Ford possibly preparing a more powerful Shelby Mustang
Following the debut of the refreshed Ford Mustang earlier this year, it appears that the American automaker is working on yet another high-performance pony car. Our spies were able to snap a heavily camouflaged Mustang on the streets of Detroit. They believe that the car seen here is the 2019 Shelby GT500.
One of the telltale signs are the wider tires seen on the test car. At the front, the tires are sized 305/30/ZR20, making these larger than the 19-inch wheels found in the Shelby GT350 and GT350R. Our spies also noted that the rear tires were bigger too but were unable to get any more information regarding that. Ford went as far as scrubbing off a lot of the markings on the sidewall.
Another possible hint that this is the 2019 Shelby GT500 is the fact that the rims have been covered as well. It is possible that Ford is hiding a set of large brakes that could well be ceramic rotors. With the covers of the front and the rear of the car, it is likely that Ford modified the sheetmetal to give the 2019 GT500 its own unique look from the GT350 and GT350R. If one were to base it on the previous-generation GT500, expect a hood with a power bulge, a different set of bumpers, an integrated rear diffuser, wider fenders and a unique headlight and tail light arrangement.
The subject of its powertrain is still up for debate. Our spies say there are two possible engine that could power the next-generation GT500. The first option is the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 with twin-turbos and the second is a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 dubbed the Voodoo. More information will be known as the car continues its development.
