Mitsubishi caught road testing next-gen ASX

The Mitsubishi ASX has been in the market for the past six years and has received several facelifts to keep it fresh against its contemporaries. All that is about to change as our spies were able to snap some photos of the next-gen ASX being tested in Europe.

For starters, the new ASX appears bigger in size and incorporates a more aggressive look. It now has a sloped roofline, along with a coupe-inspired profile. In addition, Mitsubishi appeared to have taken some styling cues from the XR-PHEV concept they showed from the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show.

Tapered headlights dominate the front end of the camouflaged ASX and even has what looks to be a three-bar front grill design. Larger doors were also installed on new crossover which could mean better ingress and egress.

Not only did our spies took photos of the ASX's exterior, they also managed to take a quick peek inside the crossover's cabin. Based on the image provided, the next-gen ASX will apparently have a new cabin layout, along with a new instrument panel, touchscreen infotainment, revised aircon vents and redesigned gear lever as such. Retained however are the distinct magnesium-alloy paddle shifters. Do note that this is a prototype and may change once it hits production.

The rear does not show much but the new ASX does have a strikingly-designed tailgate, sharp taillights and a very short rear overhang.

As for engines, downsized turbocharged gasoline engines could make its way in the all-new ASX, as well as more compact turbo-diesels. There might even be a plug-in hybird in the works or even a pure electric variant.

The next-generation Mitsubishi ASX could arrive in 2017 or 2018.
