Land Rover to expand PHEV range with electric Range Rover

With manufacturers exploring the possibility of the plug-in hybrid powertrain, Land Rover is investing further into the technology. The British marque has begun making steps to move into the hybrid market with the Range Rover Hybrid, introduced in 2014, Range Rover Sport, and the Discovery Sport.

Spied: Range Rover gets plug-in hybrid option

Just a few weeks ago, our spies sent us photos of the Range Rover Sport with the PHEV powertrain. This time around, it appears that the flagship Range Rover will be getting the electrified drivetrain as well. Last year, the Range Rover received a mild facelift and the addition of the PHEV version is set to be the latest model in the lineup.

This being a variant and not a new model, it will be visually similar to the current facelifted model. The camouflage does suggest a few tweaks to its exterior to differentiate it from the non-PHEV variants. As for this test car, it sports the standard wheelbase put it is possible that it may be offered in long wheelbase guise as well.

While there is no word regarding the PHEV powertrain, Land Rover may approach this in two ways. First is the conventional PHEV layout by pairing the electric motors with a 2.0 liter, turbocharged gas engine as seen in the Evoque. Land Rover also has the option of utilizing the 3.0 liter SDV6 engine used in the Range Rover Hybrid, allowing it more range when used with the electric motor.
