Range Rover Sport to be first plug-in hybrid from Land Rover

Back in September 2015, Land Rover unveiled three concepts featuring hybrid technologies. Called the Concept_e cars, these research demonstrators featured Land Rover's first ever electric Drive Module (eDM). This year, it appears that Land Rover is pushing for the production of these alternative powered luxury 4x4s.

The most recent batch of photos our spies sent us is a plug-in hybrid version of the Range Rover Sport. Even if the Range Rover Sport has been out in the market since late 2013, the folks at Land Rover still gave the car a layer of camouflage. This hints that the hybrid SUV will have its own look with these minor exterior tweaks. Last year, the Range Rover Sport got a mild refresh which added more features and a new engine.

According to our spies, the car seen here was sporting warning markers for high voltage, indeed confirming that it is a plug-in hybrid. By thee time our spies snapped the car, these markings have been taken off. A quick peek at the interior shows the dash has been covered, suggesting that the PHEV Range Rover Sport gets either a different instrument cluster or a whole new dashboard.

As for engines, it may follow the usual PHEV convention of pairing a four cylinder engine to a more potent electric motor. If it were to paired with a gas motor, it is likely that it will be the 2.0 liter turbo engine from the Range Rover Evoque. However, if Land Rover were to opt for creating a diesel PHEV (and a world first), the engine will be the 2.0 liter Ingeium engine which sees service in the Evoque and Range Rover Sport.
