19 buses fined for straying from bus lane

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) weren’t joking when they warned private motorists last week that the bus lane policy would be strictly implemented on the stretch of EDSA southbound from Shaw Boulevard to Guadalupe starting last Monday January 18, 2016.

After the first two days of firm execution of the ‘yellow lane’ rule, 92 vehicles have been apprehended (23 on Monday and 69 on Tuesday) and of this number only 19 were public utility buses (PUBs) (1 last Monday and 18 on Tuesday).

”Private vehicles illegally using yellow lane are fined Php 500 while PUBs illegally going to non yellow lane are fined Php 200. Both are violations of the yellow lane policy,” said Crisanto Saruca of the MMDA Traffic Discipline Office.

The goal is to hasten the traffic of high-occupancy vehicles like PUBs in order to lessen traffic congestion and, so far, the MMDA has observed a stark improvement in travel time of PUBs since the strict implementation of the ‘bus lane’ began at the start of the week.

Additional MMDA personnel have been deployed in the area in order to guide motorists and deter them from taking the yellow lane.
