Recall affects Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru and more

Takata Corporation has agreed with the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) to recall 33.8 million cars with defective airbags. It is said to be the biggest product recall in US history since the Tylenol poison scare.

Takata has formally acknowledged that there are defects in their airbags after reassuring the public that there are no problems.

“We are committed to continuing to work closely with N.H.T.S.A. and our automaker customers to do everything we can to advance the safety of drivers,” said Shigehisa Takada, Takata’s chairman and chief executive.

The airbags in question have defective inflator devices which fire unexpectedly and fire shrapnel into the occupant's bodies. Worldwide, the defect has caused over 100 injuries and 6 deaths worldwide. The brands affected by the recall are Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, General Motors, BMW and Chrysler and soon, more may be included in the list. Ford, Honda, Toyota, Nissan and other automakers have begun taking steps regarding the issue.

According to NHTSA, the problem may have been caused by moisture although the agency says they have a lot more testing to do. NHTSA, along with reports from independent organizations, points to moisture infiltrating the defective inflators over extended periods of time as a factor. In their reports, as the car ages, moisture gets trapped and reacts to the chemical propellant that ignites upon the deployment of the air bags. According to the report, “The degraded propellant ignites too quickly, producing excess pressure that causes the inflator to rupture and sends metal shards into the passenger cabin that can lead to serious injury or death.”
