Uses experience from hybrid technology to boost efficiency of small engines.
Toyota is planning to introduce newly-developed small-displacement engines that are ultra-efficient, with high thermal efficiency numbers and provides at least 10% fuel economy.
These new engines from Toyota ‘leverage combustion and loss-reduction technologies Toyota has refined in its dedicated hybrid engines’ and will be the main platform of a new lineup of vehicle.
It will have a 1.3L gas variant using the Atkinson cycle that sets the record for mass production engines that can achieve a maximum thermal efficiency of 38%.
The other is a 1.0L gas engine that peaks at 37% maximum thermal efficiency.
These new engines will be used current models that are scheduled for minor facelifts and upgrades in the near future and when all is said and done, it will have a total of 14 engine variations that will be officially introduced by 2015.
