Tokyo 2009: Toyota to unveil FT-86 concept sports car image

FT-86 to bring back passion for cars

Following a surprising apology by company Chairman Akio Toyoda over the weekend, Toyota released photos of its new sports car concept built on the concept of "Great to own and fun-to-drive," to be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. Inspired by the popular AE86 which has been a cult car, the five-seat FT-86 which returns to the fundamental concept of a classic sports car with rear wheel drive configuration, compact dimensions, low center of gravity and lightweight construction.

The car will be powered by a 2.0-liter boxer engine that boasts of both performance and environmental friendly qualities. The engine is developed by Subaru, which Toyota is a part owner of. The dimensions of the vehicle are 4,160mm x 1,760mm x 1,260mm (LxWxH) with a wheelbase of 2,570mm. Further details will follow upon the car's unveiling.

This new model will surely attract the young buyers which the company chairman said have "moved away from their uninspiring cars". The FT-86 will be unveiled for its World Premiere alongside the FT-EV II, a compact electric vehicle designed for short distance travel.
