The UN Global Road Safety Week intends to keep children safe on the road

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) there are around 186,300 children worldwide under 18 years who die from road traffic crashes annually. WHO adds that the rate of road traffic deaths are three times higher in developing countries.

With this, the United Nations (UN) Road Safety Collaboration has launched the third UN Global Road Safety Week which runs on May 4 to 10, 2015.

The third UN Global Road Safety Week intends to “highlight the plight of chirldren on the world's roads” as well as “generate action to better ensure their safety.”

With the theme “Children and Road Safety: #SaveKidsLives,” the WHO has released ten strategies for keeping children safe on the road. Among these includes reducing vehicle speed, using helmets for bicyclists/motorcyclists, improving children's ability to see and be seen, among others.
