Lowering my car

I am seriously considering of lowering my car. As of the moment I am using 195/55R15 tires on 15-inch wheels, but plan to upgrade to 205/50R17 tires on 17-inch wheels. Could you give me the pros and cons of lowering the suspension of my vehicle and also what to consider, like does it matter if I am using fluid or gas type shock absorbers, etc. Thanks a lot in advance.
Antonio C. Papa

Dear Antonio,

The biggest improvement in lowering your car would be on the handling in curves and stability due to the lower center of gravity and stiffer spring rate. The added benefit is it will improve the overall look of the car with a low stance aggressive appearance especially since you're going to change to bigger wheels. Expect a change in ride comfort as it will be a bit harsher than you original suspension setup. Still, it will depend on what kind of spring you install. The choice of using gas and fluid depends on you and your budget. Gas-filled will always be better than the fluid-type as the gas stabilizes the dampening under pressure preventing the shock absorber from bottoming out giving better handling. Fluids are softer and more pliant but not that effective for spirited lowered handling capabilities. Thanx for writing.
