Hi!
Just got some questions regarding idle engine speed range for a 94' corolla 12-valve 1.3, what should be the engine speed during idle (without aircon turned on), and what should be the engine speed during idle with aircon turned on? Is engine speed during idle when aircon turned on should be higher than the engine speed during idle when aircon is turned off?
Tnx! More power!!
Charles
Dear Charles,
Ideally, the average engine speed at idle with the a/c off is 700-900rpm. The moment you turn on the ac,the load of the compressor pulls down the rpm to around 200rpm creating that engine parasitic drag or power loss. Thats why the idle up triggers the engines carb or solenoid switch to pull up the rpm a little and stabilizing it at 800 or 900 rpm. The reason being is that if the idle is too low, your engine dies out at stop go traffic especially during hot weather. It's also needed to increase the idle a little so that the alternator can charge the battery especially during traffic. If the engine idles too high, lets say 1200 and up, you lose fuel economy, create unwanted wear and tear in your engine, not to mention, a possible overheat. Make sure your car is properly tuned and always in shape for reliability and economy. Thanx for writng.
