Reverse gear delayed engaging at first ignition

My car is a '99 Civic VTi (sir body) with automatic transmission.
I would like to know why at initial start-up, it takes a while (around 10-15 seconds waiting time) for the reverse gear to actually engage after moving to 'R' slot position but the D4 engages well. Sometimes to expedite, I have to move to D4 and then back to Reverse mode just to agitate the Reverse setting. The ATF does not seem to be spent yet though it has been maybe more than a year. How come only the Reverse gear? What should I do? Thanks

Fix the switch selector of the gear shifter cable, it has slackened already throughout the years. That should put it back to normal the moment you re adjust it properly. Thanx for writing.
