Nissan Z24 engine

Hello,

Let me first congratulate you for your very successful column. The tips you share are very practical and scientific! Galing!

Now to my question...I have a gas-powered Terrano using the antiquated Z24 engine. (I surfed around and this engine has been around since the Datsun days!) It has bad fuel economy, and feels lame as well. Ang bagal! For the gas I'm consuming -- I was hoping to get at least some benefits on power and acceleration. Any ideas? Are there turbos or super chargers available here? How much would they cost? Any other tuning tips? Or should I even bother with it or just sell it?

Yes the Z24 may be antiquated but it's probably the most durable engine Datsun has ever built. FYI, the famous truck engine is so strong that it was used in the powerful 240SX in the US. The reason being is the bearings and block are built so thick and heavy that it doesn't warp or flex even at constant heavy load. The best way for you to get more power out of your engine is if you can put a good free flow exhaust, performance air cleaner, or even a good headworks job. You'll get about 10% more power just from the exhaust and intake upgrade alone. You can get a good Solex or adapt a 2 barrel weber or holley for more kick ass power, but you'll consume more fuel. If you want a cost effective solution, removing the front axle and transfer case but you'll give up the 4WD capability of your truck. Another cheap and fast altrnative is to install a rear diferential from a Nissan Ultra-clasic pick up. Now that's something!

Thanks for writing!
