Actor Jomari Yllana announced that he will be taking part in a one-make racing series in South Korea featuring the Hyundai Accent.
Speaking to AutoIndustriya.com, the veteran actor, race car driver and founder of Yllana Racing shared with us how he came to be invited to take part in the race which we assume to be the Ecsta V720 Accent series under the CJ Super Race banner.
“Actually nangyari ito nung June sa BRC (Batangas Racing Circuit) sa pag balik ko sa karera with the Philippine GT series,” said Yllana.
The Philippine GT series is a competitive racing championship where drivers bring more powerful sports cars and race wheel to wheel on the track. Yllana used to drive alongside Jody Coseteng in Toyota Team Tom's back in the 1990's.
“During the event, a few Koreans from GTR (Garrett Turbo Racing – Korea) brought along a Hyundai Accent to the track and asked me to try it out for a few laps,” continued Yllana. “That was the first time in a long time na naka-drive ako ng front-wheel drive car on the track. Nakaka-miss actually kasi enjoy yung power ng kotse kahit na nasanay na ako sa Genesis Coupe ko.”
The car that Jomari Yllana tested was a stock Hyundai Accent 1.6L CRDI turbodiesel with a 5-speed manual transmission.
“After 5 laps, bumalik ako sa pitlane and saka ko lang nalaman na tina-time nila yung laps ko. The guys then offered me a race seat to the Accent one-make race in Korea as part of their team on October 12, and they will provide the race car for the remainder of the 2014 season of the series,” continued Yllana.
AutoIndustriya.com was unable to fully confirm which racing series it was that GTR was referring to, but all indicators point to the CJ Super Race series in South Korea with its Kumho Ecsta V720 Accent championship that will take place from October 8 to 12, 2014 at the Korea International Circuit in Yeongnam. KIC is the same track used for the Formula One Korean Grand Prix.
“Yung 2014 season medyo patapos na, but it will serve as a learning experience for myself and for Yllana Racing,” continued the actor. “The last two events of the season will prepare myself and my team for the 2015 season. All we need to do now is find sponsors lalo na yung sa airline and logistics. Sana makakuha kami in time for the races.”
“Our deal with GTR is that if we do well and win races, we will progress dun sa mas matataas na series nila,” concluded Yllana.
If it is confirmed to be the Ecsta V720 Accent series, then Yllana will be racing in the feeder series for the higher tiers of the CJ Super Race championships. On another note, veteran Filipina race car driver Gaby Dela Merced is also taking part in the CJ Super Race, but in the GT category.
Contrary to rumors, Jomari Yllana's racing effort is independent of Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc., the exclusive distributor of Hyundai in the country. Yllana's Genesis Coupe, however, was seen sporting the livery of Hyundai Paranaque West dealership during the Philippine GT. Fellow actor Dingdong Dantes has an ownership stake in the dealership.
