A 1-2-3 finish from Audi
Audi recently won the Manufacturers Title with a 1-2-3 finish at the finale of the 2014 DTM (German Touring Car Masters) at the Hockenheim race track last October 19, 2014. The podium sweep also gave Audi a 51 boost to change their previous 21 point deficit into a 30 point lead; totaling 409 points for the season. BMW ended with 379 points while Mercedes-Benz got 222 points.
Finishing 1st was Swedish driver Mattias Ekström with his Red Bull Audi RS5 from Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline. This is Ekstrom's second consecutive placing him 2nd in the drivers' rankings. In 2nd place was last year's champion German driver Mike Rockenfeller in the Schaeffler Audi RS5 of Audi Sport Team Phoenix, he also advanced to 3rd in drivers rankings. Completing the Audi podium was British driver Jamie Green in the Hoffman Group Audi RS5.
Taking the drivers' championship however was Marco Wittmann of BMW Team RMG.
Ekström and Rockenfeller started off with hard tires and maintained their positions in the top ten and only switched to softer tires during the final stages of the race, making up one position after another. Jamie Green was maintaining his lead from the start of the race up until the the last 2 laps when Ekström and Rockenfeller managed to intercept Green due to a delayed safety car period.
“Our aim this weekend was to win the manufacturers’ championship. And in the end we clearly decided it in Audi’s favor – not least thanks to a brilliant team performance. That drivers from all three Audi Sport Teams mounted the podium today speaks a clear language. On this weekend everyone could see how strong the Audi RS 5 DTM is. 15 in 30 possible podium places this year are an impressive tally. Congratulations also to Mattias (Ekström) and Mike (Rockenfeller) on taking the runner-up’s spot and third place in the drivers’ championship. We’re already looking forward to 2015 when we’re aiming to recover car number 1 as well,” said Dieter Gass, Audi Sport DTM Head.
