Bruno Senna arrives in Bahrain amid a row over the presence of his HRT team on the grid for the season-opening race, with several leading figures in the sport moaning it has no place among the big boys.

Another complaint concerns Senna and his team-mate Karun Chandhok, neither of whom has any experience in Formula One or of driving the untested HRT car.

While Chandhok was hired because of the money his association could bring to the team, Senna's name clearly influenced his selection, although unlike Chandhok he has a good record in lower-level racing. He also has the ringing endorsement of his late uncle, Ayrton, who in 1993 famously said: "If you think I'm fast, just wait until you see my nephew".

But Senna is determined to forge a reputation of his own, albeit one aided by early advice from his uncle. "He was always my reference," he told the Daily Telegraph. "From the very beginning he used to tell me: 'Oh, you have to take this race line because this is the best way'. But I think the biggest thing he did was to nurture my competitiveness. We used to race everything. Everything. We used to race jet-skis on the water, karts, everything we could race we did."

Now the spotlight is on him. "I have not reached my maximum at all," he said. "There is so much to come. But I can only do it if I do it. It will probably take half a season to find the limit of the car." (I think what he means is, the car's POTENTIAL, not limits.  As a race car driver, your job is to drive at or close to the limit all the time)

He is also aware that the Brazilian public are unlikely to be patient and will demand instant success or unflattering comparisons will start. "We are spoilt, spoilt by having three multiple world champions. If you're not world champion, you're shit. But I don't feel any extra pressure because of my name.

"My uncle and I used to drive against each other on the track and I could do the same lap times that he could in go-karts and I was eight, so he obviously believed in my talent. But as much as people compare me to him, and want me to be him, I'm not. I'm just myself.

"What I have to do is just make sure that as a driver I take advantage of every single opportunity I have. I'm confident talent will shine through."

(So what do you guys think?  Is he like his famous uncle?  I think not but I'm very interested to watch him and give him a chance.  He should at least be quicker than his teammate all the time)

I think he would struggle with untested equipment. (the HRF1 car.)

he should prove himself asap and move to the big teams early in his career if he hopes to live up to his famous surname!  Evil 5

i agree. with no testing done by both the driver and car we won't be getting a clear picture if it is the car that lacks pace or the driver.

Napanood ko kanina yung practice session.  Didnt look good for HRT... Best time was Nico Rosberg 1min 55.409 sec.  Sennas time was 2m 06.968 sec.  Senna was clearly struggling with his cars handling.

Well, not surprising.  Setting up an F1 car is so complicated.  Setting up a 2010 F1 car is the most complicated of all cuz of the heavy fuel load and skinny front tires. Lewis was complaining that when the car is heavy, its difficult to stop.  If balance is not achieved, the driver can easily spin the car under braking or cornering.  For HRT, since this is the very first testing session, all the suspension settings will be neutral and they will have to slowly adjust it for the driver.  Poor Chandook didn't even get to drive while Senna only did a few laps.  Not enough to do any chassis tuning to help with driving the car.

I remember setting up my brand new race car the first time.  Just by suspension and tire tuning alone, and this is with a production car remember, I was able to improve my lap time by 2-4 seconds in a much shorter track than this one.  F1 cars are a whole lot trickier and sensitive to drive.  So, maybe this 11+ seconds difference of Senna will go down to about 5-6 seconds by race day, IF they can get the other systems working properly.  That's really a tall order, considering.  I expect HRT to DNF and use this weekend purely for testing purposes.  I just hope they don't cause any accidents or get anyone hurt cuz of their slowness.

in fairness, he seems to be consistently quicker than his teammate, Kahrun Chandhok, during the Bahrain GP. I wonder what he could do in better machinery...  Roll Eyes

latest interview of Senna

http://en.espnf1.com/hrtf1/motorsport/story/20924.html

"This car slides a lot and it's very difficult to find that limit. I believe I'm around 75 to 80% on the tyres, so there's a lot of performance to come just by finding that window. This will come with more mileage and experience."

OK so he's no Ayrton or Alonso. They would have been able to get closer to 100%, you think?

I'm amazed he is not frustrated or embarrassed by driving such a low-class car. It must be terrible to get lapped 4x in a race. Well, its a long long race, not a sprint race.

I like his attitude, especially his sense of humor...

"We drove together from Barcelona to Monaco actually and I worked out how to make Karun shut up. All you have to do is go fast in the wet. When a car is aquaplaning he's very quiet."  Applause

driving that POS he can't showcase his true potential and i'm afraid that might be cast off if the team goes out.

i think he's doing ok actually, considering...in F1 naman you can only stay if you can get sponsors to back your ride. Right now there are 3 Brazilians in F1. Senna will have to get a backer if he wants to continue
