???Good day to all users i bought a second hand toyota corolla '93 model, and i want it to have a paint job, suddenly my mechanic told me so that my engine needs an overhaul because there's an oil leak in the gasket and oil seal, even in the muffler there's a black oil leaks, and it has a white smoke everytime i use the car. as package they will do the paint job and overhaul my car's engine. Can anyone please help me who knows about this matter, i'm just a beginner, and my fault is hindi ako nagsama ng mekaniko nung binili ko yung car... so please help help help.....  Huh

kung gaskets lang naman yung sira ok lang yan. they will just remove the distributor and replace the gaskets and oil seal. pero when he says na overhaul yung buong engine better think twice. you only need to overhaul the engine if you notice that there's definitely something wrong with the car. plus a paint shop that also does engines? for me, i dont think thats a good shop... i smell something fishy... and it definitely doesnt smell good.

ask for a second opinion...although in my experience, white smoke usually (not always) means busted oil seals, there's nothing wrong in asking for another mechanic's opinion.  Cheers

madaming oil seal and gasket, di lahat ibig sabihin overhaul pag may leak.

good luck

i own a corolla 93 model, if ever the engine is really shot and needs overhauling, better try other alternatives like japan surplus engine that is still in good condition. ako i opted to swap for a 1600cc 4age 20v engine in replacement with my old 2e 1300cc engine, cause i had bad experiences with major overhauling jobs here, either that or i just didnt find the right mechanic to do to job.

Police

Actually overhauling old Jap cars are no big deal, IF you know what you are doing.  There are really good mechanics here.  Thing is, most car owners just wanna make tipid.  They don't know what's going on so they make tawad to the mekaniko, who, just to be accommodating, will also make tipid and buy cheaper replacement parts instead of oem, or not replace worn parts if they are still ok.  Then after a short time, the engine burns oil and loses compression again, instead of lasting 100,000 kms or so.

What I'm saying is, there is a right way and a cheap way to do it.  The right way is, make kalas everything and inspect, by micrometer or visually.  If it doesn't fall within factory spec, replace.  You can only tell what the total cost will be after the job is done because each engine is different, some require more replacement parts than others.  There is a minimum charge for the overhaul kit, that is the gasket and oil seals, piston rings, etc.  Most older engines will need to be sent to the machine shop.   There is also a whole lot of other parts that may need replacing like clutch/pressure plate/bearing or the flywheel needs refacing.  Also, in an old engine, you always need to replace the water pump, oil pump, distributor cap, rotor and ignition wires, belts/timing chain, air filter and spark plugs, unless they were recently replaced.  You may also need to replace engine mounts and suspension, as well as steering bushings that will probably be worn out also in a car that old.

A good mechanic will have the factory manual or access to the factory overhaul specs of your particular engine.  He may consult with the factory or machine shop for this.  He will have the right tools for the job or may rely on the machine shop to do the inspection and assembly.  His choice of machine shop is also important.

In the end, it may not be worth it to overhaul it, just do a cheap job and sell the car to some other sucker so you can buy a car that was well maintained.  Or buy a new car.  That's what most people do.

Try to check with at least two or three mechanics...
