If you own a Mazda built from 2017 to 2019, you might want to read this. Recently, Mazda Philippines issued a recall for several models within the mentioned model years. The part that needs replacing is the fuel pump motor (fuel delivery module), and Mazda Philippines says it affects 1,835 vehicles.
This recall affects most Mazda models sold in the country. Included in the recall are the Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6, MX-5, CX-5, and CX-9. Among the cars mentioned, the Mazda2 has the most affected units with 735 sedans and hatchbacks covered by the recall. There are a lot of CX-5 crossovers also affected by the faulty part, with 699 units that need the replacement part.
As for the Mazda3, 347 units are affected by the recall. There are also 37 CX-9 units fitted with the defective module. 12 units of the MX-5 need immediate attention, while the Mazda6 is the least affected with just 5 cars due for the part replacement. Mazda Philippines says 2020 models are not included in the recall.
The Mazda recall is similar to the one issued by Toyota recently. Like Toyota, Mazda also uses fuel pumps from Japanese supplier Denso, and the company issued statements indicating that their fuel pumps could have problems such as harder starting or even stalling. At low speed, the issue is minimal, but at faster highway speeds an engine stalling is very dangerous.
At the moment, Mazda dealerships are contacting the owners of the affected vehicles. Mazda Philippines also has the Vehicle Identification Number (as stated in the OR/CR) of the units that need the new part. Customers can also contact their Mazda dealership to find out by giving them the VIN, or head to their website for the complete VIN list.
Mazda Philippines began contacting owners as early as October 20. The company is urging them to schedule the service as soon as possible. They are also reassuring customers that the needed parts are already in dealerships, meaning they can drive it and get the fix done on the same day. The service takes about 2.5 hours to complete, and it is free of charge.
