2015 Legacy boasts of roomiest cabin in its segment, all-new hi-tech safety features and more.
The 2015 Subaru Legacy makes its global unveil at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show delivering a subtle blend of minimalism and imposing character. The 2015 Legacy promises more cabin space, interior refinements, safety and efficiency.
Echoing design cues from the Subaru Legacy Concept which debuted at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, the production model combines a sporty coupe-like form and efficient function. Key to the sleeker profile is a ‘nosecone’ front section that combines the grille and bumper into one smooth piece. An aluminum hood reduces weight over the front wheels, while enhancing steering response. New aerodynamic improvements have been designed to lower fuel consumption. A new Active Grill Shutter system also helps improve fuel economy by reducing wind resistance when closed. The rear is highlighted by u-shaped LED tail lights for a luxurious appearance.
The new Legacy measures at 4,796 mm long, 1,840 mm wide, 1,500 mm tall, and sits on a 2,750 mm wheelbase. Compared to its predecessor, it is now 66 mm longer and 60 mm wider, but lower by 5 mm; it sits on the same 2,750 mm wheelbase. The larger body has resulted in a larger cabin room resulting to about 45 liters more space, rear seat legroom of 967.74 mm and nearly 10 liters more trunk space at 424.8 liters.
The cockpit features a decidedly sporty instrument panel highlighted by two binocular-style gauges with a central 3.5-inch LCD multi-information display, while EyeSight-equipped models receive a 5-inch LCD. To improve driver visibility, the windshield is more raked and pulled forward by 2-inches at the base, seating hip points were able made higher, while side view mirrors were relocated to the doors. A new ‘Eco’ gauge is now standard to promote fuel-efficient driving habits using color bars. A new interior design highlights horizontal themes, while new soft-touch materials, thicker cushioning for the armrests and center console, and new trim styles give the 2015 Legacy a more premium feel.
To improve ride comfort and reduce road noise, Subaru has fitted a new acoustic windshield, liquid-filled engine mounts, expanded use of foam insulation and floor damping material and use thicker panels in key locations like the floor, toeboard, rear wheel apron and inner fenders.
Under the hood is either 2.5-liter 4-cylnder DOHC FB-series naturally-aspirated boxer engine capable of 177 PS and 236 Nm of torque, or a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder naturally-aspirated boxer capable of 260 PS and 335 Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.
To improve handling and driving dynamics, suspension geometry has been improved along with retuning of the springs and dampers. A new quick-ratio electric steering system is now fitted giving improved steering feel while reducing fuel consumption. The new Active Torque Vectoring system recently debuted with the high-performance WRX and WRX STI, Incline Start Assist and electronic Hill Holder System come as standard. The new Legacy also benefits from the improved Active Torque Split version of Symmetrical AWD for better torque distribution in response to driving conditions and wheel slippage. Rear brakes are now fitted with ventilated discs for all variants.
For safety, a rollover sensor automatically signals the side curtain airbags to deploy if an imminent rollover is detected. New Steering-Responsive Foglights help illuminate curves for better visibility. The standard rear-view camera is now located closer to the center of the car for more natural imaging.
A new and improved EyeSight system which combines Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning comes as an option and the new rear radar system available for premium models offers three functions: Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert with LED indicators on the side mirrors that alert the driver. Rear Cross Traffic Alert uses an indicator in the rear view camera display. Also for the 2015 Legacy, new Steering-Responsive Foglights are added, which help illuminate curves for better visibility.
