Hyundai Asia Resources Incorporated (HARI), the official distributor of Hyundai cars in the Philippines previewed the 2015 Sonata that will soon be available for the market. Debuted by the automaker back in March this year in South Korea and is the seventh-generation Sonata to date. It will make its formal debut in the country on December 15, 2014 at the SM Mall of Asia.
The 2015 Hyundai Sonata carries four core innovations dubbed as RSVP: Run, Stop, Versatility and Protect. According to the company, the RSVP theme of the car shows the car’s strengths amidst its crafted exterior.
Run signifies the exterior design and powertrain of the car. The 2015 model now 35mm longer, 30mm wider and 10mm taller than the outgoing model. The increase in length also meant that the automaker were able to increase the wheelbase by 10mm, allowing more space for the interior cabin. According to Hyundai, the US Environmental Protection Agency categorized the interior of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata as a ‘large car’.
Utilizing the brand’s new Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, it now has a lowered hood design and what the company calls a Flat Underbody which reduces wind drag and keeps the tires gripped to the ground. Under the hood is the carried-over 2.4-liter Theta II inline-four engine that produces 178 PS with 228 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm which is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
Stop on the other hand features the Sonata’s handling and driving safety features. The front MacPherson struts was refined and is now more stable during braking and enables more aggressive steering while the rear dual multi-link suspension has been lowered, optimizing the rear wheel geometry and allows high-speed stable driving and turning. It now has Electronic Stability Control (ESC) that prevents skidding during sudden stops/turns, Hill Climb Assist (HCA) that engages the brake automatically when stopping on an incline and an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) that makes using the parking brake easier instead of the traditional lever.
Versatility displays the car’s interior amenities which include Hyundai’s Human Machine Interface (HMI) that can be seen on the car’s design, features and tech. The center dashboard has a T-shaped layout and sports ergonomic-friendly switches, controls and screens. Sound deadening has also been improved via Hyundai’s Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) enhancements. Other amenities available for the 2015 Sonata include Bluetooth connectivity, a Panoramic Sunroof, the Smart Key and Trunk and the Puddle Lamps that light up as you enter or exit the vehicle.
Protect expounds on the car’s shell structure as well as other safety features. The body shell is constructed out of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS), twice as strong as ordinary steel according to Hyundai. Compared to the older model, the use of AHSS reinforced the car’s bending and twisting by 35% and 41% respectively. Its other safety systems include the Blind Spot Detection system (BSD), Front and Rear Parking Sensors and a Rearview Camera for easier parking. It has multiple airbags which consist of the driver/passenger airbags, front side airbags and the rear/side airbags.
