The all-new Porsche 718 Boxster has officially made its world debut and sports a more muscular exterior and new turbocharged engines. The first of the new-generation models to get the 718 monicker, Porsche claimed that the roadster will carry on the tradition of the original 1957 718 sports car that won several races during the late 50s and early 60s.
Beginning with the front end, it has a more sculpted front fascia, according to Porsche. It gets larger cooling intakes, which indicate its new turbocharged aspiration. Completing it all is a set of new bi-xenon headlights that come with integrated LED daytime running lights (DRLs). LED headlights with four-point DRLs will be available as an option however.
Over to the side, it has bigger air inlet panels with two fins that further emphasize the car's new look. The wheel wells, on the other hand, get 19-inch alloys which come standard on the Boxster S. Those that prefer the larger 20-inch wheels can get them as an optional extra.
LED lighting was also used on the rear taillights while a new accent strip gives off a wider look for the rear of the 718 Boxster, as claimed by Porsche.
Most of the interior is carried over from the previous Boxster but gets an updated instrumental panel and a new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) unit with mobile phone integration and audio interfaces. It will also come with the Sound Plus package as standard, delivering 110 watts of audio power added Porsche. Additional equipment like Navigation with Voice Control and Connect Plus can be had as additional equipment.
Power-wise, the new 718 Boxster will be available with two new turbocharged flat-fours. Driving the standard 718 Boxster is a 2.0-liter motor that produces 300 PS and 380 Nm of torque. The more powerful 718 Boxster S gets the larger 2.5-liter engine which cranks out 350 PS and 420 Nm of torque. Compared to the otugoing models, the downsized engines produce 35 PS more while torque gains are at 100 Nm and 60 Nm respectively. Both engines benefit from Porsche's Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) tech and are 13% more fuel efficient than the previous flat-sixes.
Both variants are fitted with 6-speed manual gearboxes as standard but can be specified with the optional PDK dual-clutch transmission. When equipped with the latter, the standard 718 Boxster will sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds (0.8s faster than manual) while the 718 Boxster S can do it in 4.2 seconds (0.6s faster than manual). Top speed of the 718 Boxster is at 275 km/h while the 718 Boxster S can go all the way to 285 km/h.
Porsche says the 718 Boxster S also handles better than its predecessor thanks to a retuned chassis, tweaked power steering and stronger brakes.
