Production at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen factory in Stuttgart has kicked into high gear after the company announced that production of the all-new 718 Cayman has commenced. First revealed to the motoring public during the 2016 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, the new Cayman received a slightly revised exterior, along with a new turbocharged powerplant.

“The production launch of the Cayman successor models was executed to our full satisfaction.  After the successful launches of the new 911 at the end of last year and of the new 718 Boxster in spring 2016, the team in Zuffenhausen also handled this production launch impeccably. This is further proof that our employees work with perfection and passion on a daily basis to enable a very special Porsche experience for our customers,” said Albrecht Reimold, Executive Board Member for Production and Logistics at Porsche AG.

The factory used to produce more than 220 cars per day. With the inclusion of the 2017 718 Cayman, Porsche expects that overall production will ramp up to about 240 vehicles a day by August. Back in 2015, the Zuffenhausen factory was able to roll out 22,663 units of the Boxster and Cayman.

Orders for the 718 Cayman and 718 Cayman S are now open. On the other hand, Porsche expects that the market launch of the new model will begin at the end of September 2016 in Europe.

In review, the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman gets a myriad of tweaks apart from the renaming. For starters, the front fascia gets improved airflow for the cooling system and intercooler courtesy of a new bumper. Meanwhile the interior gets styling cues from the 918 hybrid supercar. In terms of amenities, the 718 Cayman can be had with the following: Connect Module with Porsche Car Connect, Apple CarPlay, USB connectivity and Navigation with voice control and real-time traffic information.

As previously stated, the 718 Cayman ditches the naturally aspirated flat-sixes. Now, the Cayman is available with two turbocharged flat-fours. First is the 2.0-liter engine which puts out 300 PS and 380 Nm of torque, dwarfing the outgoing 2.7-liter by 25 PS and 91 Nm. Replacing the older 3.4-liter on the other hand, is a 2.5-liter motor which cranks out 350 PS and 420 Nm of torque, upping the ante by 25 PS and 30 Nm.

Apart from the new turbo flat-fours, Porsche also gave the Cayman better handling which comes courtesy of firmer springs and stabilizers, and revamped dampers. Steering, on the other hand is now more direct as Porsche also fiddled with the steering system.
