Volvo revives S90 nameplate with all-new flagship model
Volvo's all-new flagship sedan has officially arrived in the country, the 2017 S90. Dubbed by the automaker as their 'Magnum Opus', the new S90 is the latest addition to the brand's 90 Series lineup which includes the new XC90 launched late last year.
Underpinning the 2017 S90 is the 'Scalable Product Architecture' (SPA) platform similarly used in the XC90. It features a safety cage that is comprised of different steel grades that combine rigidity and energy absorption. It also houses a new electrical system that enables easy installation of new technology in safety, infotainment and vehicle dynamics.
Like the flagship SUV, the 2017 S90 gets Volvo's signature Thor's Hammer LED headlight design, along with the large front grill. Also seen on the S90 is its coupe-like shape, a nod to the Concept Coupe from 2013.
Around the back, edgy C-shaped taillights and the distinct trunk lid give the 2017 S90 a sophisticated finish. Meanwhile, the dual exhaust pipes exudes the car's performance pedigree. Rounding it all up are the large 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin P Zero tires.
Inside, the flagship sedan is upholstered in high-quality leather and is accented by soft-touch materials, wood panels, glass knobs / switchgear and piano-black trim pieces. It also gets the large tablet-inspired touchscreen infotainment system, as well as a digital instrument panel.
An array of turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engines are available for the 2017 Volvo S90; but for now, only the D4 S90 has been confirmed for the local market. The turbo-diesel model produces 193 PS along with 400 Nm of torque. Power is then transferred to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Being a Volvo, the new S90 is equipped with an impressive safety suite as standard. Some of the technologies include: front, side, curtain and driver's knee airbags, park assist, active high beam assist, stability control, rear collision warning, lane departure warning and city safety collision avoidance assist as such.
Pricing is as follows:
2017 Volvo S90 T5 - PhP 4,195,000
2017 Volvo S90 D4 - Php 3,995,000
