Shortly following yesterday's leak of the 2018 Ford Mustang, the Blue Oval brand has officially revealed the updated pony car. Bearing a meaner look, along with new technologies, the 2018 Mustang aims to deliver better performance, improved handling and better ergonomics.
“The new Mustang is our best ever, based on more than 50 years as one of the iconic sports car in America and now, the world. Tapping Mustang’s enormous fan base, we’re bringing the new Mustang straight to the people – and introducing the new car across multiple social media channels, reaching millions,” said Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford, The Americas.
According to the automaker, the 2018 has a more 'atheletic design' thanks to the new hood and remodeled upper and lower front grill. Together with the repositioned hood vents, Ford claims this gives the Mustang a leaner and more aerodynamic design. A new set of headlights also make their way in the 2018 Mustang and will come standard with full LED lighting – low beam, projector high beam, turn signals, daytime running lights and foglights.
Around the back, the signature three-bar taillights now have a curved design and also come with LED lighting. Completing it all are the new rear bumper and high-performance spoiler, and the tweaked diffuser. Beyond that, Ford also mentioned that the 2018 Mustang is now available with three new exterior colors and 12 distinct wheel choices.
Moving over to the interior, Ford says the pony car gets restyled seat surfaces along with new patterns and color choices. Also present are the hand-stitched center console with contrast stitching and the padded knee bolsters.
In terms of infotainment, the 2018 Mustang comes with SYNC Connect 3 and the FordPass app as standard. The latter acts as a way to remotely control certain functions of the car like via a smartphone. The app can start the engine, check the fuel and lock / unlock doors as such. The app can also help you by finding a parking spot in advance and even help you schedule your next service appointment.
Also new inside the 2018 Mustang is the 12-inch LCD screen that can be customized to one's preferences. It can be set to either Normal or Sport and can display three separate views.
A wide array of safety tech were also made available in the 2018 Mustang like pre-collision assist, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist and Driver Alert System.
As previously reported, Ford has decided to drop the 3.7-liter Cyclone V6 for the 2018 model refresh. Carried-over from the pre-updated Mustang are the 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four and the 5.0-liter Coyote V8. The former benefits from an increase in torque for better acceleration at full throttle while the latter now comes with port fuel injection and an increase in compression ratio which is now at 12:1 (previously at 11:1). Ford has yet to release the exact power figures for the tweaked engines.
A reworked 6-speed manual transmission and a new 10-speed automatic gearbox will be available for the 2018 Mustang. The manual gearbox now comes with a twin-disc clutch and dual mass flywheel to increase torque capability. On the other hand, the 10-speed automatic will deliver quicker shift times and reduced friction losses. It will also come real-time adaptive shift to ensure the right gear is always selected, along with paddle shifters.
Available as an option for the 2018 Mustang is the MagneRide damping system which is a part of the Mustang Performance package. With it, the Mustang optimizes the ride and allows for better handling in all situations.
The 2018 Ford Mustang will arrive in US dealerships by the end of the year.
