The local crossover market welcomes a new contender in the form of the 2018 Honda CR-V. Now in its fifth-generation, it is the first time that Honda Cars Philippines Inc (HCPI) introduces diesel power for the CR-V and it also serves as HCPI's first-ever diesel offering. Along with that, the CR-V is now available with proper third-row seating.
For 2018, there are four variants to choose from, namely the 2.0 S CVT, V Diesel, S Diesel, and SX Diesel AWD. The fifth-generation CR-V's design is now in line with Honda's current design language. Dubbed the 'Solid Wing Face' look, it gets a pair of slim, upswept headlights and a bold grill. A broad shoulder line defines the side of the all-new crossover, along with a steeper windshield rake and thicker lower half cladding. Like the fourth-gen CR-V, the 2017 model also features a window line that kinks upwards, plus the tail lights are given a unique, L-shaped treatment. Also, the license plate holder is now place lower down the tail gate.
All variants benefit from full-LED headlights with LED daytime running lights. Exclusive to the SX AWD is a High Beam Support System, panoramic sunroof, power tailgate and rain-sensing wipers. All S and SX models ride on 18-inch alloy wheels with the lone V Diesel model rolling on 17-inch wheels.
Inside Honda's all-new crossover is a redesigned dash and cabin. Drivers are greeted by a Full Color Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Instrument Cluster, much like the Civic. SX Diesel, S Diesel, and 2.0S variants are also equipped with a 7-inch Touchscreen Display Audio system. The touchscreen integrates multimedia and hands-free telephone functionality, and the reverse camera dynamic guidelines. S Diesel and SX AWD diesel models adds navigation and more controls for the dual-zone automatic climate control system.
This generation of CR-V comes standard with third-row seating for all the diesel variants, allowing seating for seven. To access the third-row, the second-row seats slide and recline forward. Speaking of its second row, these seats fold with a 60:40 split. All rows of passengers benefit from air-conditioning vents plus there are two extra USB ports in the center console to charge devices.
Powering most of the 2018 CR-V range is a 1.6-liter i-DTEC turbodiesel engine. With its variable geometry turbo, variable valve timing and Earth Dreams Technology, the result is 120 PS and 300 Nm of torque. It then shifts via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Save for the entry-level model, all CR-Vs are powered by this engine. The base model gets a 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine, which was carried over from the previous generation but now shifts with a continuously variable transmission instead of a five-speed automatic.
All variants get a host of active safety features which includes an Electronic Parking Brake with Auto Brake Hold, Agile Handling Assist, Driver Attention Monitor, Vehicle Stability Assist, Hill Start Assist, Anti-Lock Braking System with Electronic Brake Distribution, Emergency Stop Signal, Multi-View Reverse Camera with Dynamic Guidelines, and a Low Tire Pressure Warning system. S variants meanwhile get the LaneWatch Camera, Side Airbags, Side Curtain Airbags, and Walk Away Auto Lock feature.
Opt for the SX AWD and the Honda Sensing safety suite will be standard. These include Adaptive Cruise Control, Low Speed Follow, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Keep Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation, Forward Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Warning.
