2018 Nissan Navara gets a high-tech upgrade

One could say that pickup trucks are more high tech than ever. What are, essentially, workhorses, are now equipped with features once reserved for luxury sedans. For 2018, Nissan has given the Navara a substantial technology upgrade with the addition of their Intelligent Mobility safety and tech package.

Marking the differences between the updated Navara and last year's model are minimal. The only visual change to the exterior is the refurbished grill. As for the rest of the truck, the look is carried over from the pre-update model, right down to the wheels. It's the same story inside, with its design and trimmings mostly being carried over from the pre-update models.

As mentioned, the main highlight of the 2018 Navara is the availability of the Intelligent Mobility safety and driver aid system. This package includes four cameras mounted on the pickup with one on the grill, a pair each for the side mirror and the tailgate. These further assist the range of sensors that are fitted to the Navara.

With these four cameras, it allows the driver to have a 360-degree, bird's-eye view of the pickup. There's also the option for a selectable split-screen close ups of the front, rear, and side views. Also included is Moving Object Detection which warns drivers of approaching objects when maneuvering. Further enhancing the driver assist package is the blind spot monitoring system, informing the driver of approaching vehicles not seen in the line of sight.

Under the hood is the familiar four-cylinder 2.5-liter, DDTi turbodiesel engine. Depending on the model grade selected, there are two power outputs for the same engine. It starts with 163 PS and 403 Nm of torque and tops out at 190 PS and 450 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic with manual mode. Two-wheel drive is standard while the four-wheel drive model employs a shift-on-the-fly mechanism.

Prices for the 2018 Nissan Navara with Intelligent Mobility will be announced soon. With the current excise tax favoring pickups, it is possible that it may be slightly lower than last year's prices.
