Facelifted Toyota Yaris makes its regional debut

The updated Toyota Yaris has made its regional debut in Thailand. For the 2018 model year, Toyota's B-segment hatch gets an all-new look for its front and rear, as well as revamped interior. With its launch in Thailand, the Philippines may soon see the refreshed hatch hit the market soon, likely in late 2017.

At the front, gone are the slim headlights of the current model and in its place are larger, upswept units which run near the center of the narrow grill, all the way to middle of the fender. It adapts the 'Keen Look' design of its larger, four-door stablemate, the Corolla Altis. At the same time, the bumpers are given a more rounded look with a larger center air intake, dynamic foglight housings and integrated daytime running lights.

Like the front end, the rear section of the 2018 Yaris has also been tweaked to show off a rounder design. The upright, C-shaped tail lights give way to wider, uniquely designed clusters. Complementing the new lights is a completely redesigned tailgate which now flows further outwards from the body. As for its rear bumper, it too is an all-new design and steps away from the angular design of the pre-facelift model. The side profile on the other hand is carried over.

In theme with the exterior redesign, the cabin also gets a significant re-styling. For starters, the dashboard is now far-removed from its four-door sibling, the Vios. It now follows the form of the Corolla with its slimmer, more upright style. There's more silver trim to be seen around the cabin while the surrounds for the audio system now lays flatter on the dashboard. Door panels are also new for the 2018 Yaris, and so is the instrument cluster and steering wheel.

The Thai market gets four model grades, namely the J, J ECO, E, and G. All variants get vehicle stability control, traction control and hill-start assist, along with seven airbags. Higher-grade variants add touchscreen audio, bluetooth, LED daytime running lights and a push start button. The Thai-spec Yaris is powered by a 1.2-liter Dual VVT-i engine producing 86 PS and 108 Nm of torque. It is likely that the Philippine-spec Yaris might retain the 1.3- and 1.5-liter Dual VVT-i units.
