There is a new player in the luxury compact crossover market. Weeks after its teaser, Volvo has officially unveiled the XC40. The Volvo XC40 also introduces the brand's second scalable platform which will be used in future compact models. Once it hits the market, the XC40 will go up against the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.
One look at the all-new compact crossover and it takes its cues from its larger stablemates, the XC60 and XC90. For its front fascia, it has an upright, near vertical nose employing the marque's current design language. Its grill is recessed and sports an 'egg-crate' pattern for the R-Design models. Other variants get the waterfall look of the other Volvos in the range. That said, the headlights are U-shaped units incorporating Volvo's signature Thor's Hammer LED light pattern.
Giving the XC40 more presence is a clamshell hood and unpainted body cladding surrounding the bottom half of the car. Its sides meanwhile have little in the way of character lines with the body gently extending from the window line to give the car a broader stance. A bold crease then resides in the rear quarter panel to form the shape of the tail lights. As for the rear, it retains the classic Volvo look with its high-set, pillar-mounted tail lights. These units, packing LED tech, for the shape of an inverted 'L' and bucks the trend of Volvo wagons and crossovers with lights pointed towards the center.
Inside, there's the large infotainment screen adapted from Volvo's flagship models. Slim, vertical air-conditioning then flank the sides of the said screen. The center stack is then tilted towards the driver with the passenger side dashboard fascia featuring a concave design. Also seen here is an LCD screen serving as the XC40's instrument cluster which also houses trip information and vehicle status. Furthermore, there are more C-shapes on the door panel.
This being a Volvo, it is packed with active safety assists. These include the semi-autonomous Pilot Assist system, the latest generation of City Safety, Run-off Road protection and mitigation, Cross Traffic alert with auto brake and a 360-degree Camera. There are also a host of airbags at the front and at the side, as well as stability control.
Under the hood of the Volvo XC40 is a variety of engines with one turbodiesel and two turbochaged gas options. The range starts with a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder turbo mill but, at the moment, Volvo has yet to reveal its specific output. Up next is the 2.0-liter inline-four with 247 PS and 350 Nm. The lone diesel is a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter mill that produces 190 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Volvo adds that there will be plug-in hybrid models to join the range.
