2019 Audi A7 Sportback debuts with more style and tech

Second-generation A7 continues Audi's large four-door coupe line

Just a few days after it was previewed, Audi has pulled the covers off the second-generation A7 Sportback. Audi says the sleek five-door liftback boasts more style than its predecessor and it also features tech from the brand's flagship sedan, the A8. Like the rest of the new Audi range, it rides on the MLB II Evo platform which underpins many of Volkswagen Auto Group's upcoming high-end cars.

True to Marc Lichte's preview late last year, the all-new A7 Sportback gets a bolder, more aggressive front fascia. There is a new LED light signature, as well as a sleeker, slimmer 'Singeframe' grill. Complementing the front fascia is its distinct hood featuring creases on the middle and on the sides. Each variant of the A7 Sportback will come with their own unique styling touches with the S Line serving as the sportier version of the liftback.

The sides meanwhile retains the signature sweeping profile, giving it a coupe-like shape. Framless windows are also present, and so are door-mounted side mirrors. As with the previous model, the rear end is tapered at the tip. Also, there is a retractable spoiler that extends at 120 km/h. A flat light strip joins the rear lights, whose tail lights are made up of 13 vertical segments. Audi is proud to say that the A7 Sportback's exterior is largely devoid of chrome.

Audi says the interior features a 'reduced, clean design language' and is unique to the to the A7. The double layered dashboard sees flat surfaces on top and curves at the middle section. The face of the dash is finished in gloss black and just above the trim are slim air-conditioning vents. Also, the infotainment touchscreen is flush with the dashboard fascia. Lastly, the climate control screen is located just below the infotainment system, giving the driver interface a near button-less design.

The new A7 Sportback features a total of 39 driver assistance systems split up into three packages: the Audi AI parking package, the City assist package with the new crossing assist, and the Tour assist package. The latter includes such things as the efficiency assistant, which facilitates a driving style conducive to reducing consumption, and the adaptive driving assistant (ADA), which supplements the adaptive cruise control (ACC) with helpful steering interventions to maintain the lane. All driver assistance systems feature improved control mechanisms. Some of these features will be gradually introduced beginning 2018.

Initially, the all-new A7 Sportback will be powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 340 PS and 500 Nm of torque. Additional six- and four-cylinder engines, both gasoline and diesel, will follow shortly after the start of production. There will also be a hybrid model that will join the range in the future.
