Refreshed Chevy Malibu gets sporty for 2019 model year refresh
Just as Chevrolet recently launched the 'all-new' Malibu at this year's Manila International Auto Show (MIAS), the bow-tie brand also revealed the refreshed model over in the US. Donning a sportier exterior, along with fresh new tech, Chevy claimed the 2019 Malibu 'offers an athletic design and amazing features' in one.
Starting with the exterior revisions, the updated D-segment sedan carries a sleeker-looking front fascia. Compared to the pre-facelift version, the 2019 Malibu receives sleeker headlights, a sporty dual-port grill design and new foglights / LED daytime running lights. Additional chrome trim, as well as more powerful LED headlights were also put in place for the 2019 model year update.
There are also changes on the rear of the Malibu which gives emphasis on the the car's width and more stylish look. This was done thanks to a new rear valence which pushes out the dual exhaust pipes even further and the use of new taillights that highlight the dual-element design.
“The Malibu’s fresh look refines and enhances the sculptural beauty of the Malibu. It will also be an obvious member of the Chevrolet car family,” said John Cafaro, Executive Director at Global Chevrolet Design.
As mentioned earlier, the updated Malibu also gets an array of standard in-car tech. These include the new Infotainment 3 touchscreen display, 8-inch driver information center display, reverse camera and new heated rear seats. Like the 2019 Cruze, the Infotainment 3 system offers faster Bluetooth connecitivty, new apps, better graphics and the inclusion of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G LTE wi-fi as standard.
Under the hood, the Malibu is available with two turbocharged engines, a 1.6-liter and the bigger 2.0-liter. The former puts out 160 PS and 250 Nm of torque while the latter generates 250 PS and 350 Nm of torque. The 1.6L mill is mated to a six-speed automatic while the 2.0L lump is connected to an eight-speed automatic.
For those that want an even sportier-looking midsize sedan, the 2019 Malibu is also available in RS trim. Unlike standard models, the RS Malibu comes with blacked-out aesthetics (front grill, bow-tie emblems) along with a trunk-mounted spoiler and unique 18-inch alloy wheels. Beyond that, the RS also gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear selector, as well as black cloth seats.
The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu will arrive at US dealerships later this year.
