After revealing the refreshed Civic sedan and coupe earlier this year, Honda has now introduced the 2019 model year Civic Type R and the Civic Hatchback. Both the hatch and hardcore hot hatch now get slight styling upgrades together with new standard features inside.
For starters, both cars now come equipped with an updated Display Audio System which now has physical buttons and a volume knob for a ‘more intuitive control’. For those not in the know, the infotainment system currently being offered in the Civic does not have physical buttons, and are merely touch sensitive units. Together with the new infotainment, there is also improved Bluetooth connectivity and voice control function.
Buttons on the steering wheel have been upgraded for simplified operation while other interior bits have also been upgraded including the new larger cup holders. The electronic parking brake, on the other hand, now has an indicator light when engaged. Externally, Honda did not make any changes to both the Type R and Civic hatchback’s styling. Everything from the previous model year has simply been carried over unlike the sedan and coupe.
For the Civic Type R, it continues to use a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and produces the same 306 PS and 400 Nm of torque. It is then mated to a six-speed manual which sends power to the front wheels. Unique to the Type R in the US is the new Sonic Gray Pearl color for the 2019 model year. The PH-spec Civic Type R, on the other hand, gets a different shade called 'Polished Metal' which was made available last July in a new batch.
As for the Civic hatchback (which is currently not offered in the Philippines), the 2019 model now comes standard with Honda Sensing which includes Collision Mitigation Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Road Departure Mitigation to name a few.
The updated Civic Hatchback and Civic Type R will go on sale beginning this November in the US. Expect the updated Civic models to make their way to the Philippines soon.
