Maserati Levante gains new variant with 550 HP GTS

While Maserati is better known for their super sedans and grand touring coupes, they are making quite the buzz with their crossover, the Levante. Earlier this year, they revealed the Trofeo, the sports car-baiting crossover packing 590 PS. This time around, the rolled out a 'slightly' milder version.

Dubbed the GTS, it's a plusher, toned-down version of the Trofeo with less power. Of course, that doesn't mean it's not a potent machine. Propelling the Levante GTS is a retuned 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 which packs 550 PS. While power is down by 40 PS, torque output for the GTS remains the same as the Trofeo, rated at 730 Nm.

Power is then transferred via a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and Q4 Intelligent all-wheel-drive system. Also, its twin-turbo V8 is built by the folks from Ferrari over at Maranello. As for performance, Maserati claims it can sprint from 0 to 97 km/h in 4 seconds flat and can reach speeds of over 290 km/h.

The exterior of the GTS appears less aggressive compared to the Trofeo. The range-topper's gloss black trimmings make way for the GTS' chrome detailing and accents. It does retain the large corner air intakes in the front bumper, as well as the low front apron. Wheels are also unique to the this particular variant, and it comes with standard alloys rather than the gray-finished pieces on the Trofeo. The GTS can also be specified with 22-inch wheels. Adaptive full LED Matrix headlights are optional.

Cabin design is largely carried over from the standard models, albeit with more tweaks for a plusher feel. It gets full premium perforated leather seats, complemented by an Alcantara headliner. A special instrument cluster graphic is unique to the GTS while a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system comes standard in this variant.

The Levante GTS is yet another addition to the range which was launched two years ago. Locally available are the twin-turbo V6 gas and V6 turbodiesel. The GTS, along with the Trofeo, is up against the like of the Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, Mercedes-AMG GLE 63, and the upcoming BMW X5 M.
