2019 Mercedes G-Wagen, now with AMG power

More powerful Mercedes-AMG G63 makes its official debut

Last month, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the all-new G-Class. It retained most of the previous generation's iconic body styling, but does introduce some new changes to the iconic SUV as well. Now, just a month after the G-Wagen's debut, the German automaker unleashes its more powerful AMG variant – the G63.

For those wondering, the 2019 G63 does live up to the AMG name despite being a tall, boxy SUV. It now does 0-97 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, which is almost a second faster than the previous generation G63. It is capable of doing so thanks to a more powerful 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine which produces 585 PS and 850 Nm of torque.

Power is sent to the all-four wheels via an AMG Speedshift TCT nice-speed automatic. Top speed is limited to either 221km/h or 240km/h with the driver's package option selected. The AMG-tuned 4MATIC all-wheel drive can also send power as much as 60-percent of power to the rear.

Despite being more performance oriented, the G63 can still take it off-road. AMG also tweaked the suspension and offers adaptive adjustable damping which can be optimized for off- or on-road performance. It comes standard with an assortment of high-low range gear and multiple off-road modes, which can be selected by the driver.

Apart from the more powerful, the G-Wagen has also undergone a diet which also helped it achieve those performance figures. The all-new G63 now weighs 174kg less than it's high-performance predecessor. However, Mercedes has yet to release the official weight of the new AMG G-Wagen.

Design wise, the AMG G63 can be easily distinguished from the standard G-Class by its unique Panamericana grill. There are also larger air intakes in the front bumper and slightly wider wheel arches to accommodate the larger and more aggresive wheels. The twin-pipe, side-exit active exhaust and large red brake calipers and discs further sets it apart from a standard G-Wagen.

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 will make its public debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next month. Prices will be revealed later with the model official going on sale towards the end of the year.
