Ram is looking to change the way we open the tailgates on our pick-up trucks, as well as how to use them everyday.
For 2019, the Ram 1500 is now available with what the company calls the 'Multifunction Tailgate'. While it may look like any normal tailgate, this one comes with a rather unique features. Besides having the usual drop-down opening, the new Multifunction Tailgate can also be opened sideways with a 60:40 split.
That's right, the tailgate features side-hinges which allow drivers to open it much like a door or cabinet. This allows for easier loading or removal of heavy loads on the bed. It also comes with a total of four configurations; open flat, open left, open right and open both doors. Each door swings open 88 degrees and is complemented by a retractable center-mounted stepboard for easier access.
Apart from the new tailgate, the 2019 1500 is also available with a fully-sprayed bedliner and the innovative RamBox cargo management system. It is comprised of removable, weatherproof storage bins that are built into the bed rails. In addition, the RamBox also comes with a 115-volt, 400-watt power outlet that can power tools and other equipment.
“The Ram Multifunction Tailgate is intuitive to operate, and owners will find it immediately useful. Combined with Ram’s class-exclusive RamBox feature and new tailgate step, we’re taking Ram’s cargo management and storage to the next level,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram – FCA.
The new Multifunction Tailgate option will be available to all 2019 Ram 1500 models and will arrive in dealerships in Q2 of 2019.
