2019 Toyota 86 goes retro with TRD Special Edition, no power upgrades

Toyota unveils retro-inspired 86 TRD Special Edition

The Toyota 86 is due to be replaced soon but the company is not yet done giving the 2+2 sports coupe a fresher look. For the 2019 model year, Toyota has revealed the sleek and sporty 86 TRD Special Edition.

Billed by the company of blending pure fun with athletic looks, the 2019 86 TRD Special Edition comes equipped with several performance add-ons along with a unique exterior finish.

The limited-run 86 is only available in one color; Raven Black. It is then given the classic TRD tricolor graphic design on the side which gives it a more striking appearance. To top it all off, the special 86 also gets a TRD bodykit (includes front and rear bumpers, side sills, diffuser and spoiler), a TRD exhaust kit with stainless steel tips, 17-inch 'twisted spoke' alloy wheels and TRD badges all around.

Pop the doors open and the 86 TRD Special Edition greets you with a sporty red and black interior. From the seats, to the steering wheel, handbrake lever, gear shift boot, seatbelts and door cards, the limited 86 comes laden in the unique two-tone finish. In terms of in-car amenities, the 86 TRD Special Edition is fitted with a 7-inch touchscreen display as standard. It supports AM/FM radio, USB, Aux, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity and is complemented by a Pioneer 8-speaker sound system.

Under the hood remains the ever-familiar 2.0-liter FA20 flat-four with D-4S. When saddled with a six-speed manual gearbox, the engine delivers 205 PS and 211 Nm of torque. However, when equipped with the optional six-speed automatic, the flat-four only puts out 200 PS and 205 Nm of torque.

While the 86 does not get a bump in power, the TRD Special Edition does receive uprated brakes, dampers and tires. Giving it better stopping power comes courtesy of large four-piston front calipers and two-piston calipers from Brembo. Sachs dampers, on the other hand, provide sharper handling for the already agile 86. Finally, Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires give the sports coupe better grip on the road.

The 2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition is only available for the US market. Only 1,418 units will be built in total. There is no word if Toyota will offer the limited-run 86 elsewhere.
