2020 Audi S6, S7 get new TDI with electric supercharger

Audi has now officially revealed the 2020 S6 and S7. Together with the new two performance model’s debut, the German marque has announced that they will no longer be powered by the 450 horsepower twin-turbo V8 fitted in the previous-generation model. Instead, the S6 Sedan, S6 Avant, and S7 Sportback will now be powered by either a new turbocharged diesel coupled with an electric supercharger driven and 48V MHEV (mild hybrid system).

In Europe, the new S6 and S7 will only be available with a new 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine option. The new TDI will is coupled with an electric supercharger (EPC), and 48V mild hybrid system – the same engine found in the SQ7. It produces 700 Nm of whiplash-inducing torque and 349 horsepower. In terms of performance, the S6 Sedan is capable of going from 0 to 100km/h in just 5 seconds; the Avant and S7 will take an additional one-tenth of a second. All three cars have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The mild-hybrid system allows the cars to coast for up to 40 seconds in the engine deactivated, while it also powers the start/stop function.

While Europe is getting the newer high-tech TDI engine, other markets such as the US, Asia, and the Middle East will be getting the S6 and S7 with a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 which produces 450 PS and 600 Nm of torque. Power figures sound familiar? That’s because it's the same engine you’ll find in the RS4 Avant, RS5 Coupe, and RS5 Sportback. Interestingly, Audi did not disclose performance figures for the twin-turbo V6-powered S6 and S7. However, do expect it to be a bit slower than that of the RS4 and RS5 as a result of them being heavier.

When it comes to styling upgrades, the changes are very subtle over the standard A6 and A7 and the S6 and S7. Noticeably, the S6 and S7 have silver and dark chrome accents all around unlike the A6 and A7. The performance models also come with larger brakes and redesigned wheels to help them standout somewhat.

The 2020 Audi S6 and S7 will officially hit dealers later this year.
