Quick, what other country in the world makes muscle cars that can rival the Americans? If you said Australia then you are right. From the Holden Commodore, to the Ford Falcon (different from the USDM Falcon), the guys from the Land Down Under know a thing or two about making V8 muscle.
Sadly, the Falcon has already bid farewell...but that doesn't mean Ford Australia's division has been resting on its muscle car laurels. Say hello to the 2020 Ford Mustang R-Spec, a supercharged version of the pony car that is available straight off the showroom floor. Developed alongside Herrod Performance, this souped-up Mustang comes with genuine Ford Performance parts and is only limited to 500 examples.
“We have been working hard with Herrod Performance to deliver a supercharged Mustang to Australian customers. Now, working with Herrod Performance, we’ve been able to bring this special edition Mustang to Australian customers through our extensive dealership network, and with the peace-of-mind of five-year, unlimited kilometre warranties backed by Ford and Herrod,” said Kay Hart, president and CEO of Ford Australia and New Zealand.
As mentioned earlier, the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 gets a huge jump in power thanks to a 2.65-liter supercharger that delivers 0.82 bar of boost. Ford did not say how much power this special edition makes. Our best guess is that it produces about 700 PS at best. Complementing the supercharged engine comes courtesy of a Herrod Performance exhaust system, firmer Ford Performance springs that drop the ride height by 20mm, Magneride suspension, adjustable stabilizer bars, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.
It's not all performance upgrades that the Mustang R-Spec has received, however. Stylish new 19-inch alloy wheels from Ford Performance fill up the wheel wells of the R-Spec. It also gets a revised front fascia design courtesy of a new front grill, lower air intake, as well as a chin spoiler. Meanwhile, blacked-out decals, a new side skirt, and a new rear wing further enhances the R-Specs's mean looks.
As for amenities, the SYNC3 infotainment system comes with a Bang & Olufsen 9-speaker sound system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a fully-digital instrument panel, as well as automatic climate control. Active driver aids also make their way on the R-Spec like: autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and self-leveling headlights.
Thinking of getting one? Sadly it's only available in Australia and they have no plans of offering it elsewhere. And with only 500 units available, this particular Mustang might fly off the shelves quickly.
