The hotly-contested B-segment crossover scene will soon be saying hello to a new contender. After getting a chance to drive Geely’s first model bound for the Philippines last August, Sojitz G Auto Philippines, the official distributor of Geely in the country, has opened the order books for the 2020 Coolray.
It is set to take on the likes of the Chevrolet Trax, Ford EcoSport, Honda HR-V, and the Hyundai Kona. The Coolray (also called BinYue in China) features a cool-looking exterior design inspired by Star Wars, as well as a cockpit that draws heavily from jet fighter aircraft.
Immediately noticeable on the Geely Coolray is the signature ‘expanding cosmos’ front grill and sleek headlights. Depending on the variant, the Coolray can either come with projector halogens or LED headlights. A choice of either 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels is available for the Coolray. The taillights are of the LED kind while a quad exhaust system gives the crossover a sporty appearance.
Size-wise, the Coolray measures 4330mm long, 1795mm wide, and 1609mm tall. Wheelbase and ground clearance, on the other hand, come in at 2600mm and 196mm respectively.
Open the doors, and the Coolray greets its occupants with a futuristic dashboard. Splashes of metal finishes, along with a distinct red-trimmed dashboard (only for top-of-the-line models) give the Coolray’s interior a snazzy finish. Meanwhile, a huge 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard across the range.
The center console is also uniquely designed to look cool, as well as free up space for additional cubby holes. There will even be a panoramic sunroof available on the range-topping variant. Leather seats, 360-degree around-view camera, as well as automated parking assist will be available for higher-grade variants of the Coolray.
Under the hood, the Coolray is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-three dubbed ‘GPower’. Despite its size, the compact engine produces an impressive 177 PS at 5500 rpm along with 255 Nm of torque at 1500 - 4000 rpm. Power is then sent to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Claimed 0 - 100 km/h comes in at 7.9 seconds and all four corners come with disc brakes.
The 2020 Geely Coolray is now available for reservation at a special introductory price of Php 1,198,000. A total of three variants (Comfort, Premium, and Sport) will be available for the Coolray and will come with a 5-year / 150,000 km warranty, whichever comes first. The distributor shared that they have actually received over 40 orders for first foray into the market.
Geely’s return to the country will see them open their first showroom along EDSA, right beside SM North EDSA. Additional pricing and details of the 2020 Coolray will be revealed at a later date.
