For the longest time, Ssangyong Philippines has only been offering the Tivoli, Tivoli XLV, as well as the Rodius van. Then came along the Musso which serves as the brand's contender in the pickup truck segment.

They were lacking a big seven-seater SUV which could attract buyers that would normally go for a pickup passenger vehicle (PPV). Well after two years since its global reveal, Ssangyong has officially brought the all-new Rexton to the Philippines.

The flagship SUV features a sleek and distinct exterior design that makes it look upmarket. Large upswept headlights dominate the front fascia and is accompanied by a wide front grill. C-shaped taillights, on the other hand, give the SUV a unique look. Finally, it gets a shiny set of 20-inch chrome wheels on the top-of-the-line variant. Smaller 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels are available on the lesser version.

Inside, the range-topping model comes with quilted brown leather upholstery which covers all the seats, as well as the dashboard and door trims. Heated and ventilated front seats are also standard equipment, along with memory function for the driver's side. Entry-level versions, on the other hand, only come with black leather heated front seats, and a driver-side only power-adjustable seat.

Available in any of the models, however, is an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports AM/FM radio, Aux, Bluetooth USB, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It even gets dual-zone automatic climate control, six-speaker sound system, and an electronic parking brake. Other available amenities in the Rexton include: 7-inch multi-info display, power tailgate, leather steering wheel, 50:50 split third-row seats, and LED interior lighting.

Powering the Rexton is the familiar 2.2-liter turbo-diesel inline-four with e-VGT. It's the same engine that can be found in the Musso pickup and it generates 181 PS at 4000 rpm along with 420 Nm of torque at 1600 – 2600 rpm. Power is then sent to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Depending on the variant chosen, the Rexton is available in both four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive.

Only available on the top-spec 4x4, however are six airbags as the 4x2 only has dual airbags for the driver and front passenger.
