All-new GWM Cannon is here to compete against other pick-up trucks
Great Wall Motors (GWM) Philippines is out to dominate not just the crossover SUV market. Also in their sights is the pick-up truck market and they have launched their contender in the segment.
Say hello to the 2023 GWM Cannon, and it's putting everyone in the pick-up truck market on notice. Spanning over 5.4 meters long and sporting a large bed at the back, the Cannon is not only big in size but also comes with plenty of in-car amenities.
Beginning with its looks, the Cannon features a muscular exterior that's dominated by a huge grille at the front, along with eye-catching LED headlights and daytime running lights. It also rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 265/60 series tires.
A pair of vertical LED taillights give the pick-up some additional eye candy while the tailgate itself benefits from hydraulic assist to help drivers in opening and closing it. Other exterior features available on the 2023 Cannon include a spray-on bedliner, side steps, auto-folding side mirrors, and front/rear foglights.
Size-wise, the Cannon dwarfs most of its midsize competitors. Measuring 5410mm long, 1934mm wide, and 1886mm tall, its huge size gives it a clear advantage for those that want a bigger pick-up truck. It also has a generous 3230mm wheelbase which maximizes cargo bed space and cabin room. Speaking of cargo, the Cannon's cargo bed measures 1520mm long, 1520mm wide, and 540mm tall.
Open the doors and the Cannon greets occupants with a decked-out cabin. Leather upholstery comes as standard on all variants, including automatic climate control with rear vents and a PM2.5 filter. Also available across the range is a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a tilt/telescopic steering column.
Available only on higher-grade variants are the 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-adjustable front seats, a wireless charging pad, a 220V power outlet, and an auto anti-glare rearview mirror.
Powering the 2023 Cannon is a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine that produces 161 PS and 400 Nm of torque. It is then paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission with manual select. Like most pick-up trucks, the Cannon is available in either 4x4 or 4x2 guises, with the former being available with a part-time 4WD system, torque-on-demand (TOD), and low-range gearing.
A wide array of safety features is fitted as standard on the 2023 Cannon. These include a host of airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, hill-descent control, hill-start assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
On higher-grade variants, the pick-up will come with a suite of intelligent driver aids like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane-center keeping assist, lane-change assist, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition.
