Longer and more practical Suzuki Jimny 5-Door makes official PH debut
After being spotted several times in the country, the cat is officially out of the bag for Suzuki Philippines Inc (SPH). Making its official debut in the country is the 2024 Suzuki Jimny 5-Door.
Longer and a bit more practical than the 3-Door body style, the Jimny 5-Door is aimed at attracting 4x4 customers who want something a little bit more spacious but can still go off the beaten path should they choose to.
As expected, the Jimny 5-Door is longer than the regular 3-Door, but only just. Measuring 3820mm long and having a 2590mm wheelbase, the Jimny 5-Door is 170mm longer than the 3-Door and gets an additional 340mm of wheelbase. Width, however, remains the same at 1645mm while its height is 1720mm which is 5mm less than the 3-Door.
Suzuki also mentioned the Jimny 5-Door comes with 210mm of ground clearance, an approach angle of 36 degrees, a ramp break-over angle of 24 degrees, and a departure angle of 47 degrees. Like the 3-Door Jimny, the new 5-Door version also comes with 15-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 195/80 series tires.
LED headlights come as standard on the GLX. The LED headlights also come with an auto-leveling feature to ensure optimal illumination at all times. The entry-level GL variant, however, only comes with halogen lighting.
Not only did the extra length give this particular Jimny two additional doors for the rear passengers, but the longer body also allowed Suzuki to give the 4x4 SUV better cargo space than the 3-Door variant.
In fact, Suzuki claims the 5-Door Jimny is rated to carry 211 liters of luggage with the rear seats up, a significant increase over the 3-Door's cargo capacity. If you need to store more cargo, the 50:50 split rear seats can be folded to accommodate 332 liters worth of luggage. But since the 5-Door is also as wide as the 3-Door version, it can only seat two people in the back still.
Climb aboard and the interior is pretty much the same as the regular 3-Door. That means a retro-inspired gauge cluster with an integrated multi-info display, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system (7-inch on the GL) with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, automatic climate control (GLX variant only), and toggle switches on the center console.
Thanks to the added length, passengers in the back can now easily ingress or egress via the new side doors. Other available features found inside the Jimny 5-Door are; leather seats for the GLX (GL only gets fabric seats), steering wheel audio controls, a 4-speaker sound system, and power-folding side mirrors (GLX only). Last but not least, there are now extra window ports on the D-pillar to let more light in.
Like the 3-Door version, the Jimny 5-Door comes with the familiar 1.5-liter K15B four-cylinder engine that puts out a humble 102 PS at 6000 rpm along with 130 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual that’s standard in the entry-level GL and a 4-speed automatic that’s only available in the top-of-the-line GLX.
As before, it’s also equipped with a selectable 4WD called AllGrip Pro. It has settings for 2H (2WD High), 4H (4WD High), and 4L (4WD Low). To ensure its capability off the beaten path, it has a rigid axle suspension with coil springs.
When it comes to safety features, the Jimny 5-Door is fitted with the following; anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, stability control, hill-start assist (AKA hill-hold control), hill-descent control, a reverse camera, parking sensors, and a pair of front airbags. Exclusive only to the GLX are additional curtain (front and rear) and side front airbags.
"Get ready for an incredible journey and experience the beauty of places yet undiscovered that nobody but Jimny can bring you," said Norihide Takei, Director and General Manager for the Automobile Division of Suzuki Philippines.
Available colors for the GL and GLX variants of the Jimny 5-Door are Jungle Green, Celestial Blue Pearl Metallic, Arctic White Pearl, and Granite Gray Metallic. Meanwhile, the two-tone colors exclusive for the GLX include; Sizzling Red Metallic with Bluish Black Pearl and Chiffon Ivory Metallic with Bluish Black Pearl.
