BMW unveils the all-new X1, the company's smallest crossover in their SAV lineup. The all-new SAV is no longer based on the 1 Series and instead, shares its underpinnings from the Mini Countryman. For the first time in its model history, the X1 recieves a transverse mounted engine layout, indicating that it will be front wheel drive. The new X1 is the second BMW to go front wheel drive after the release of the 2 Series Active Tourer. The front wheel drive models get an sDrive designation while the all wheel drive models will called xDrive.
At the front, the all new X1 features a bolder kidney grill and curvier headlights compared to its previous generation. The high mounted fog lamps echo those of the old X1 and below it are larger air vents. The new X1 is taller than its predecessor, gaining 53 mm in height.
There are four trim levels available for the 2016 X1: the standard model, Sport Line, xLine and M-Sport. The M-Sport package comes with an aerodynamic body kit,18-inch lightweight alloy wheels, cloth/Alcantara sport seats, Aluminium Hexagon trim and matte blue accents.
Inside, BMW highlights the increase in interior space. Knee room has increased by 37 mm but can be extended up to 66 mm with the optional sliding rear seats. The cargo capacity is also larger than its predecessor and can extend its capacity via the 40:20:40 rear seats which have the option of reclining. The front passenger front seat can also be folded flat for X1's with the option.
Entry level X1's feature cloth seats, Oxide Silver trim and high-gloss black accents. The iDrive infotainment system in now standard and has a 6.5-inch display. Interior options include Dakota leather seats and Fineline Stream or Oak Grain wood trim to name a few.
On the technology front, the 2016 X1 will be available with the optional heads-up display and a Driving Assistant Plus package that adds Active Cruise Control (with Stop & Go), Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Jam Assistant, Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking.
The initial engine lineup consists of 2.0 liter, four cylinder gas and diesel variants in different states of tune. The 2.0 diesel starts with 150 PS and 330 Nm of torque while the top spec 2.0 diesel puts out 231 PS and 450 Nm of torque. The gas models start with 192 PS and 280 Nm of torque while the top of line models put out 231 PS and 350 Nm. Engines with lower outputs are standard with sDrive front wheel drive while high output engines are available with xDrive. All engines feature BMW's TwinPower Turbo technology.
Two entry level models will soon join the lineup along with BMW's new 1.5 liter three cylinder engine. The X1 sDrive16d will produce 116 PS (85 kW), while the X1 sDrive18i develops 136 PS (100 kW). The engines are mated to either a six speed manual or an eight speed automatic.
The all new BMW X1 goes on sale in Germany by October. There is currently no word when it will arrive for the Philippine market.
