All-new BMW X5 to be offered in EV, PHEV, FCEV, and 48V mild-hybrid versions
Next-gen Neue Klasse BMW X5 enters final testing phase
Since last year, BMW has confirmed that the next-generation X5 will be available with various powertrains. From a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), an electric vehicle (EV), a hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) version co-developed with Toyota, as well as hybrid (HEV) and internal combustion (ICE) versions, the fifth-generation BMW X5 will be offered with various electrified powertrains to cater to a wide range of customers.
Fast forward nearly one year, and BMW is in the final stages of testing the all-new X5. The automaker is now conducting final calibration drives around its production plant in Spartanburg, in the US. More importantly, BMW announced that the latest X5 will be first revealed in EV form via the upcoming iX5.

That's right, the fifth-generation BMW X5 will be available for the first time as a fully electric crossover SUV. In fact, the automaker said that the iX5 60 xDrive will have the largest high-voltage battery pack ever fitted onto a BMW at 144 kWh. It will then power a pair of electric motors (one on each axle) and will work in tandem with the brand's signature xDrive AWD system. BMW says the all-electric iX5 60 xDrive will put out a healthy 578 PS, although torque output and range have yet to be revealed.
As mentioned before, there will also be an FCEV variant, which will be called the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. The automaker says it will be the first-ever hydrogen-powered BMW production model and will hit the road in 2028. The powertrain system was co-developed with Toyota and ensures that cabin space will not be affected, as most of the hardware (including the carbon fiber hydrogen tanks) will be placed on the floor, leaving cabin space unaffected.

Also mentioned by BMW is the X5 50e xDrive, which will generate 489 PS. Based on that output, it looks like the current G05 50e xDrive PHEV will be carried over from the outgoing fourth-generation model, which pairs a 3.0L TwinPowerTurbo inline-six, an electric motor, and a 25.7 kWh lithium-ion battery.
Last but not least are the 48V mild-hybrid ICE models, which will consist of turbo-diesels and turbo-gas models. So far, the only mild-hybrid gas model confirmed is the BMW X5 40 xDrive, which pumps out 400 PS. As far as diesel power is concerned, the xDrive30d and xDrive40d models may be carried over for the Neue Klasse X5.

Other features that will be available in the all-new BMW X5 include massive 23-inch alloy wheels, an adaptive suspension with electronically-controlled dampers, almost 50:50 weight distribution, a two-axle air suspension with electronically-controlled dampers via the Adaptive Chassis Control Professional, and a new suite of intelligent driver aids.
With the Neue Klasse BMW X5 inching closer to its big reveal, we're hoping we are only just months away before BMW takes the covers off.
