The all-new Mazda Roadster, also known as the MX-5, has been named the 2015-2016 Car of the Year Japan.

Designed to provide “pure driving pleasure,” the lightweight open-top, two-seater MX-5 features Mazda's Kodo design language as well as the SkyActiv technology.

According to Mazda, in order to deliver further driving pleasure, the weight of the all-new MX-5 was reduced by over 100 kilograms. In addition, Mazda engineers were determined to make the vehicle “practical enough for daily use” by integrating a weatherproof, easy-to-operate roof.

Mazda President and CEO Masamichi Kogai said that the company is inspired by being recognized as the 2015-2016 Car of the Year Japan. Kogai added that Mazda will continue to build cars that offer driving pleasure.

"This result is thanks to everyone's enthusiastic support, and we are both grateful and proud that our Roadster has received such a prestigious award. Inspired by this win, we will continue building cars that offer driving pleasure, aiming to become a 'one-and-only' for our customers that they will choose again and again," said Kogai.

Cars eligible for the award had to have an expected annual sale of over 500 units and announced or launched in Japan between October 1, 2014 and October 31, 2015. As a review, Mazda won the Car of the Year award last year with the Mazda2. With that in mind, the MX-5 is the sixth Mazda vehicle to take home the Car of the Year Japan award.

Currently, the 2015 Mazda2 SkyActiv R 4-door is the reigning Car of the Year in the Philippines, as awarded by the Car Awards Group, Inc. (CAGI).
