Less than one month before Subaru reveals next-generation 2022 WRX
The all-new WRX is one of the most highly anticipated models from Subaru. The automaker revealed the first teaser image last month. Despite not showing much of the vehicle, it did give us an idea of what the 2022 WRX will look like. But the bigger question was this: when will it debut? Now, we have an answer – August 19, 2021.
Subaru announced that the 2022 WRX will be making its global debut at this year's New York International Auto Show. Best of all, it will be live-streamed for the whole world to see. Unfortunately, the automaker didn’t say what time so be sure to stay tuned during launch day.
Apart from the announcement, the automaker also released a new teaser photo of the WRX. Like the initial teaser photo, it doesn’t reveal much, but it does show a new angle of the high-performance sedan. Thanks to all the dirt it’s kicking up, most of the vehicle’s body is obscured. The only visible parts are the windows, with the rear quarter glass now featuring an upward kink, and the wider C-pillar.
No details of the engine were mentioned. Based on a previous report, the new WRX will allegedly use a more powerful version of the turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four found in the Evoltis/Ascent. While the engine in the Evoltis already outputs 260 PS and 375 Nm torque, the one fitted in the WRX will supposedly have more than that. As for transmissions, these will likely be the same as before – a Lineartronic CVT and a manual gearbox.
From the looks of it, the new WRX will have an evolutionary design from the current model. This means it won’t look too different. Expect to see Levorg-style headlights, a restyled grille, and a new set of C-shaped taillights. The quad-tip exhaust will likely be retained as well.
Excited to see the new 2022 Subaru WRX? So are we.
