On top of the previous recall of 28.8 million cars affected by fautly Takata inflators, eight automakers have announced that an additional 12 million cars are in need of new inflators. These manufacturers include Ferrari, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota.

According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the faulty airbag inflators have been tied to over one hundred injuries in the US and thirteen deaths worldwide. The recall involves around the lack of material absorbing moisture in the inflator. When exposed to high heat and himidity, it degrades the ammonium-nitrate propellant in the inflator which causes the airbag to deploy too quickly and violently, sending shrapnel to the occupants inside. NHTSA has called the Takata inflators a “ticking time bomb.”

Sports car manufacturer Ferrari was not spared from Takata's woes. Included in the list were 458s built from 2010 to 2011 and Californias built from 2009 to 2011. Affected brands under Fiat Chrysler Automobiles include Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram. FCA products affected by the inflator recall are the previous generation Chrysler 300, Chrysler Aspen, previous generation Dodge Charger, Dodge Challengers built from 2008 to 2012, second generation Dodge Durango, Dodge Magnum, various Dodge Ram models and the previous generation Jeep Wrangler.

Honda expanded their recall to the 2009 to 2011 Acura TSX, TSX Sportwagon and to the 2010 to 2011 Acura ZDX. Other Hondas include the 2008 to 2011 Accord, Early model Accord Crosstours, 2006 to 2011 Civic, the previous generation CR-V and FCX Clarity, Fit (Jazz) Insight and previous generation Pilot. Mitsubishi Lancers and Lancer Evolutions made from 2006 to 2007 are part of NHTSA and the manufacturer's list.
